Staying safe online
If someone checks your phone or computer, looking for help can feel risky. Here is what our Exit now button does, what it can't do, and a few safer ways to reach out.
What Exit now does
Pressing Exit now, or pressing Esc twice, hides this page and sends you to a Google search page. It also swaps out the page you were on, so pressing Back won't return to it, though other pages you opened on this site may still be in the Back list.
What it can't do
- It doesn't erase your browsing history. Someone who opens your history can still see this site.
- It can't stop monitoring apps or spyware on your device, or someone who reads your router or account activity.
- Private or incognito windows hide history on that device only. Your internet provider, school or workplace network may still see where you went.
Safer ways to look for help
- Use a device the other person can't get into: a friend's phone, a library computer, or a work computer you trust.
- Call a hotline from a phone they don't check. The hotlines on our Get help page are confidential.
- If you delete your history, think about whether someone would notice it's suddenly empty. Sometimes deleting only a few entries is safer.
- If you think someone is tracking your phone, the National Domestic Violence Hotline can talk it through with you at 1-800-799-7233.
